Description: The Maithili are a major ethnic subgroup of the Bihari cluster in northeast India, closely related to the Bhojpuri and Magahi. Their geo-cultural region is known as Mithila, which also extends into Nepal where there are three million Maithili living in the Terai region of the country.
Prayer Points:
• The Maithili are fond of living together as an extended family, and traditionally live in long-houses with 40 to 50 persons, all sharing a common kitchen. Pray that whole extended families will come to Christ together and that traditional elders might become pastors and teachers of their families.
• The region of Mithila is an ancient seat of Hindu learning, creating a sense of national pride in their Hindu heritage. Pray that their passion for learning and pursuing truth might transform into a new heritage of Biblical scholarship and Christian education.
• The Maithili in Nepal have resisted efforts to be nationalized by the Nepalese and have received some degree of autonomy. The powerful movement of the gospel in other areas of Nepal has not impacted them. Pray for God's anointing on Nepali church-planters seeking to reach their Maithili neighbors.
