Description: The Maldivians are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group which inhabit the Maldive islands, just south of India. In the 12th century the last of their kings converted from Buddhism to Islam through the influence of Arab traders.
Prayer Points:
• Islam is the state religion of the Maldives and Sharia law is strictly enforced. Maldivian citizens are banned from participation in any religion except Islam. Pray for protection for the few Maldivian believers and for creativity in spreading the gospel, making disciples and worshipping together.
• The divorce rate in the Maldives is the highest in the world, with as many as 85% of marriages ending in divorce. Pray for Christ-centered marriage counseling to begin among the Maldivians that will bring hope and salvation to families, both in this life and the one to come.
• The nearest churches to the Maldivians are in Sri Lanka, and many there are getting a burden for reaching out, especially to the 15,000 Maldivians who have migrated to Sri Lanka. Pray that full-time workers might be raised up from this growing interest and for effective ministry to immigrant Maldivians.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, you see the suffering and hopelessness of the Maldivian people and long to draw them to yourself. Pour out your grace on this land through your Son Jesus and the powerful work of your Spirit.
