Description: The Rajbanshi (also known as the Koch Rajbonghsi) speak a language related to Bengali and Assamese. It is believed that their origins come from intermarriage between Tibeto-Burman tribes indigenous to the region and Indo-Aryan invaders that came into the region long ago. Another 10 million live in Bangladesh where they are known as Rangpuri, and are principally Muslim.
Prayer Points:
• The Rajbanshi are followers of the Hindu god Vishnu, known as Vaishnavism. They believe in ten "avatars" or incarnations of Vishnu who appeared in ancient history, and often teach against the injustices of the caste system. Pray that their desire for a savior might find its fulfillment in Christ, who's power alone can change hearts and society.
• The Rajbanshi are concentrated in an area that was once their ancient kingdom of Kamatapur. This territory has been subdivided between different Indian states and Bangladesh. They are demanding a state of their own. Pray that they might come to know the love God has for their people and might find their eternal place in his kingdom.
• Many Rajbanshi leaders are advocating for the national recognition of their language and its use in TV broadcasting. Pray for the production of Christian TV and radio programs in their language Rangpuri, and for many churches to be established in their homeland that use their language in worship.
