Description: The Hindkowans are an ethno-linguistic cluster of diverse tribes united by the Hindko language, whose traditional homeland is in today's northwest Pakistan region. Hindko is the northernmost Indo-Aryan mega-language in South Asia. In the 12th century the Hindkowans began converting to Islam from Hinduism and today a majority are Muslims. The influx of Pashtun refugees from Afghanistan into the Hindkowan region diluted their majority and resulted in the renaming of their homeland after the Pashtun people.
Prayer Points:
• The presence of the Taliban among the Pashtun immigrants living alongside the Hindkowan has made one of the most dangerous places for the gospel in the world. Very few workers have been sent here, and believers are an almost invisible minority. Pray for God's protection over his people in this region and for the strengthening of their faith in the midst of intimidation and persecution.
• Many ethnic groups who have settled in Hindko speaking areas have adopted the language as their mother-tongue or speak it as a trade-language, including Pashtun and Hazaras. Pray for a breakthrough among the Hinkdowan that will impact all of these peoples and the entire the northwest region of Pakistan.
• The Hindko feel as though their language and culture are under threat in today's Pakistan. Pray for a truly indigenous Hindko-speaking church to emerge that will unify the Hindkowan in Christ and transform their culture into a redemptive medium that glorifies of God.
