February: North African Muslims
Who They Are
North African Muslims are principally Berber and Arab tribes. In the 7th century Arab Muslim armies conquered all of North Africa and gradually began the process of assimilating the Berber and Coptic population into Arab culture. Most converted to Islam with a small minority of Coptics retaining their Christian faith. Among the Berbers who had been exposed to Christianity in the past, the Bible was unfortunately never translated into their language. As with many Bibleless peoples conquered by Arabs they were easily deceived by the Islamic heresy.
Today there is a rising nationalism emerging among Berbers to recover their identity, protect their language and preserve their culture. The poverty of the region is also creating tensions in the society that are causing singnificant unrest. The Arab Spring, which affected the entire Arab world began in Tunisia as a protest over rising inflation, especially the cost of food. There is a growing desperation and hopelessness about the future.
What God Is Doing
A powerful gospel movement has begun among the Kabyle berbers. Among the Coptics in Egypt many have become born again and are now sending missionaries throughout North Africa. The church in Europe is beginning to catch a vision for reaching the millions of North Africans who have migrated to their countries, especially France, Spain and Italy.
How To Pray:
-Pray that the renewed interest among Berbers to Christianity would continue to grow and result in the full evangelization of every Berber people group.
-Pray for the emerging missions movement in North Africa that God would use it to evangelize their region and beyond.
-Pray for the completion of the Scriptures in every Berber language.
-Pray for the protection of missionaries working in this dangerous region.
