Description: The Kurds constitute between 19 to 23 percent of Iraq's population. The majority speak Southern Kurdish, also known as Sorani, which includes 10 major dialects. For the first time in centuries, the Kurds have an independent homeland of their own in Iraq, which they call Kurdistan.
Prayer Points:
• It is here in Iraq that a truly indigenous Kurdish church is beginning to emerge. Pray for continued open doors for the gospel to grow in Kurdistan and for an increase in national Kurdish leadership.
• Iraqi Kurds suffered greatly under the regime of Sadam Hussein, who slaughtered over 100,000 Kurdish civilians. Today they are under threat from ISIS, and many have been forced to flee their homes. Pray for healing to come to this land and for reconciliation between nations.
• Iraqi Kurdistan has become the central hub for the Kurds, which are scattered over many nations. Pray that the growing church in Kurdistan might become a missionary movement that reaches Kurds throughout the Middle East as well as other Muslims peoples.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, we rejoice in the first fruits of the gospel we are seeing among the Iraqi Kurds. May this new beginning bring glory to your name all throughout Iraq.
Every year 36,000 Iraqi Kurd die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
