Description: The name Pahari means people of the hill country, a reference to their living in the Himalayan regions from Nepal to Pakistan. The term can apply generically to many peoples living throughout the Himalayas which speak related dialects. However, in the Jammu-Kashmir region, Pahari refers to a specific people group living primarily on either side of the border between Pakstiani and Indian Kashmir.
Prayer Points:
• Paharis are often confused with Gujjars in Kashmir and Punjabis in Pakistan. They have struggled to assert their own unique identity and most of the world has forgotten they exist, even in their own countries. Pray that they might know the boundless love of the Creator through Jesus Christ, who made them and redeemed them that they might be with him for eternity.
• There are numerous social castes among the Pahari which have specific trades and occupations. Some are nomadic pastoralists, which travel from place to place in the hill country depending on the time of year. Pray that the gospel might reach of these groups and for local pastors to be raised up from each of them.
• The homeland of Pahari Muslims was split right down the middle by the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. To this day the border between them remains one of the most dangerous in the world. Pray for God's spirit of healing and grace to be poured out upon this region through the intercession and witness of future Pahari believers.
A Prayer: Heavenly Father, though the world has forgotten and neglected the Pahari Muslims, you have not, nor will you ever. Send your love and light into their midst through the proclamation of the gospel and the demonstration of your power in Jesus Christ.
Every year 3,000 Pahari Muslims die without Christ, many of whom never hear the gospel in their lifetime. Let's do something to change that.
